The sweet smell of Texas in the spring is as fresh in my mind as the watermelon being sold on the side of the lonely highway west towards home. A buck fifteen will buy you an uncut seeded lunch. Seedless hybrids have sterile pollen. Watermelons have a longer growing period than any other garden plant. I cut the fruit in half, and handed you the larger piece. “Did you know Native Americans grew watermelons in the 16th century? I’m 33.3% Native American.” I took a bite and grew a little. The sun brings out the color in your eyes. The melon brought out the sweetness in your smile. A buck fifteen bought us an uncut seeded lunch. A buck fifteen bought me a moment I couldn’t refuse.
